Grade 1 and 1.5

  "Highlight your young clarinet section with this infectious concert selection. The clarinets stay below the break while the rest of the band provides a very tasteful accompaniment."
  
  
• Cruella De Vil - arr. Eric Osterling. (Hal Leonard) ($35.00) (Grade 1.5)
  Cruella De Vil is from Walt Disney’s movie 101 Dalmations. It is in swing style with the quarter note receiving 116 beats in 4/4 time. It starts in the key of F but changes to B-flat. There are many accidentals and also some repeated sections. The flute gets a brief solo.
  
  
• Macarena - arr. Paul Lavender. (Hal Leonard) ($30.00) (Grade 1)
  "Who new? You can play the latest dance craze tune with only six notes and just quarter and half notes for the winds. Inspire your new beginners by adding this one to their first ‘gig’.” This title is in the Explorer Level of the Essential Elements Correlated Band Series.

  “The hottest tune of the year for bands is now available in this easy-play version that works great for beginning bands. The opening measures feature added dotted barlines to help teach 5/4 meter.”
  
  
• Seasons of Love - Jonathan Larson / John Higgins (Hal Leonard) ($35.00) (Grade 1.5)
  In the Leonard Discovery Band Series. Although it is given a 1.5 grade rating, it does have some challenging eighth - two sixteenth note patterns and some two sixteenth - one eighth note patterns. Trumpets must be able to play to fourth space E flat and flutes play to high E flat above the staff. The first clarinet part requires the A above the staff.
  
  
• Sunliner - Eric Osterling (Hal Leonard) ($35.00) (Grade 1.5)
  Sunliner is a concert march in a lively 2/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 132. This march uses the eighth note, quarter, eighth note syncopation pattern throughout. Clarinets and tenor saxophone play a flowing, legato melody in the trio.
  
  
• That Thing You Do! - Adam Schlesinger / Michael Sweeney. (Hal Leonard) ($35.00) (Grade 1.5)
  This selection is from the soundtrack That Thing You Do!. It is a bright rock at quarter note equal to 132 written in a typical early 60’s “Beatle Song.”

Grade 2 & 2.5

• Disney’s Magic Kingdom - arr. James Christensen. (Hal Leonard) ($45.00) (Grade 2.5) Disney’s Magic Kingdom is a medley of the following: Mickey Mouse March, Baroque Hoedown, Yo Ho ( A Pirate’s Life for Me), and It’s a Small World. There are several key changes in this chart. It starts in the key of B-flat in 6/8 meter with the dotted quarter note equal to 112 beats. The key goes through E-flat, back to F, then E-flat and then to F again. The meter changes often also. It goes through 4/4, cut time, and back to 6/8 and again to 4/4. The band may sing or whistle, It’s a Small World.
  
  
• Ere the World Began to Be...- Jack Stamp. (Daehn) ($66.00) (Grade 2.5)
  Ere the World Began to Be.. is based on a 13th century plainchant. It begins in the key of A flat, slowly, with the quarter note equal to 60 beats per minute. This changes to the key of B flat at 68 beats per minute. The meter changes frequently from 4/4 to 2/4, to 3/4 and some 7/8 measures.
  
  
• Five Minutes a Day #4 - by Andy Clark. (Barnhouse) (Grade 2) ($32.00) (5:00)
  "Contains a Chorale Warm-Up, an Interval Study and Technique Exercise, in addition to a short Tuning Routine to get your rehearsal off to a great start."
  
  
• Happy Days - Charles Fox / Larry Norred (Hal Leonard) ($40.00) (Grade 2) (2:25)
  Happy Days is from the TV series by the same name. It is a fast rock at quarter note equal to 144 to 152. It is in the key of E flat. The trumpet section is featured in an eight measure soli. The first trumpet part has an optional G above the staff which is also written third space C.
  
  
• I Believe I Can Fly - R. Kelly/Michael Story. (Warner Bros.) ($40.00) (Grade 2.5)
  I believe I Can Fly is from the movie Space Jam and recorded by R. Kelly on Warner Sunset and Atlantic Records. This composition is in the Young Band Series. It opens “slowly”, with the quarter note equal to 76 beats per minute. The key is F. The tempo and key remain throughout. There is an optional 8 measure solo for trumpet or as a soli for trumpets. The range for the trumpet is to fourth line D. The first clarinets must play over the break. There are some eighth and two sixteenth note patterns.
  
  
• Java - arr. Eric Osterling. (Hal Leonard) ($40.00) (Grade 2)
  “Here’s one of those old favorites that you can’t get out of your head once you’ve heard it! Made famous by trumpter Al Hirt, it’s a dixie-ish toe-tapper that’s just fun to play.”
  
  
• Joyous Spirit - David Shaffer. (Barnhouse) (Grade 2.5) ($40.00) (2:03)
  "A bright and energetic march for mid-level bands. Excellent for concert and contest use."
  
  
• La Volta - William Byrd / Katheryn Fenske. (Daehn) ($50.00) (Grade 2)
  La Volta is a seventeenth century dance in 3/4 meter. This composition is in the key of B flat with the quarter note at 116 to 126. The first clarinet goes over the break while the trumpet must play to fourth line D.
  
  
• Macarena - Antonio Romero and Rafael Ruiz/Michael Story. (Warner Bros.) ($40.00) (Grade 2.5)
  This arrangement of Macarena is a dance rock in cut time at half note equals 92. The clarinets are divided into two separate lines with the 1st part going above the break. The trumpets are also divided into two lines with the highest note in the first trumpet line on a fourth line D. There are some hand clapping parts.
  
  
• The Musicians - arr. Audrey Snyder and John Moss. (Hal Leonard) ($45.00) (Grade 2) “‘I’m a fine musician, I practice everyday...’ Here’s a delightful choir/band feature that’s just right for middle school all the way through high school. Featuring all the different sections of the ensemble, it makes an excellent recruiting tool or concert showcase. It’s performable with just the band or choir alone, but you won’t want to miss the fun of combining them!”
  
  
• Plains West - William Owens (TRN) ($45.00) (Grade 2.5)
  A concert march in 4/4 time. The key changes from E flat to A flat. Trumpet parts lie well in the staff with a G on the space above the staff as the highest note for trumpets. The flute line at one point is obligato-like over a melody played by the clarinets and trumpets.
  
  
• Stille Nacht - Frank Gruber / Arr. Chip Davis and adapted by Johnnie Vinson. (Hal Leonard) ($40.00) (Grade 2.5)
  This arrangement of Stille Nacht (Silent Night) is an easier version, but yet in the same character as recorded by Mannheim Steamroller. The piano part is not essential but is recommended. A synthesizer may be substituted and is preferable.
  
  
• Strata - Eric Osterling (Hal Leonard) ($40.00) (Grade 2)
  The introduction to Strata starts maestoso with the quarter note equal to 116, but changes to vivace with the quarter note equal to 152. Then at measure 37 it changes to moderato with the quarter note equal to 96. The key changes from B-flat to E-flat and then to A-flat. Many parts are doubled in the woodwinds. The flute and oboe have a soli followed by the trumpet nine measures later. There is a D.C. leading to a coda.
  
  
• When the Saints March Around the World, - Jerry Williams. (Barnhouse) (Grade 2.5) ($45.00) (2:19)
  This piece "takes the 'Saints' and presents it as you might hear it in Latin America, Scotland, Arabia, the Far East, Germany, and the U.S.A."

Grade 3 & 3.5

• Big Top Rag - Elwyn Bischmann / Nicholas J. Contorno. (Daehn) ($50.00) (Grade 3)
  Big Top Rag is a bright rag tempo in alle breve in the key of B flat. The key changes to E flat half way through the composition. Some repeated sections and a D.S. al Coda is used. Ranges are moderate with the trumpet only playing to fourth line D while both clarinet parts require playing above the break.
  
  
• Bugler’s Dream (Olympic Fanfare) - Leo Arnaud / Johnnie Vinson. (Hal Leonard) ($45.00) (Grade 3.5)
  Bugler’s Dream goes through many key changes from B flat to F, back to B flat and on to E flat, back again to B flat and so on. Meter changes are also quite frequent starting in 4/4 and going to 4/4, to 6/8 and back to 4/4. The trumpet range is only to G at the top of the staff.
  
  
• The Calliope March - Karalyn J. Roesch (TRN) ($45.00) (Grade 3)
  A spirited cut time march written in traditional march form. The flutes and clarinets have the opportunity to stand out in the trio. Typical key change from the opening B flat to E flat in the trio.
  
  
• Change The World - Gordon Kennedy, Tommy Sims and Wayne Kirkpatrick /arr. John Wassen. (Hal Leonard) ($50.00) (Grade 3)
  Change the World was recorded by Eric Clapton and topped the charts for weeks. This composition starts with a key signature of B-flat but there are many accidentals throughout. There also is much use of syncopation patterns: eighth-rest, quarter-note, eighth-note and some sixteenth-note, eighth-note, sixteenth-note patterns. Trumpets must play to G on top of the staff. All clarinet parts go over the break.
  
  
• For You I Will - Diane Warren / Larry Clark. (Warner Bros.) ($40.00) (Grade 3)
  For You I Will is from the movie Space Jam. It is a slow rock ballad starting in the key of E-flat in 4/4 meter. There is a D.S. and optional repeat. The flute has a four measure solo. The key changes to F. Although rhythmically there are some groups of 4 sixteenth note patterns and eighth-note followed by two sixteenth note patterns, this is not too difficult.
  
  
• The Four Winds Sinfonia XVII - Timothy Broege. (Manhattan Beach) ($125.00) (Grade 3)
  The Four Winds is divided into four separate movements.
  • Movement 1 is entitled A Prelude for the East Wind. It is slow in 3/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 68. There is no key signature used through this composition.
  • Movement 2 - A Dance for the West Wind. This movement is in 6/8 meter with the dotted quarter note equal to 92.
  • Movement 3 - A Musette for the South Wind is to be played slowly and tenderly in 4/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 68. There is an alto saxophone and a trumpet solo.
  • Movement 4 - A Fantasy for the North Wind is to be played broadly with majesty in 4/4 meter at 60 beats per minute. This changes to 3/4 meter at 152 beats. There are some repeated sections.

  Ranges throughout are not too extreme. The first trumpet plays to fifth line F sharp. Only the first clarinet of three parts goes over the break. Flute plays to G an octave above the staff.
  
  

• Franklin Mountain Suite - Warner Hutchison (Kjos) ($70.00) (Grade 3) (9:00 minutes) A 4 movement composition portraying the Franklin Mountains and other El Paso landmarks. The first movement is entitled On the Mountain Top. It starts in the key of D flat at quarter note equals 60, very majestically. The second movement is entitled At the Fiesta. It is lively with the quarter note equal to 126. This movement requires many Latin rhythm percussion instruments with at least 8 performers. The 3rd movement, Down in Rio Valley, is again slow with the quarter note equal to 66 and the key is E flat. The 4th movement entitled On the Border March is a march in 4/4 time interspersed with a measure of 2/4. The key changes from B flat to C.
  
  
• Fugue on Yankee Doodle - John Philip Sousa / Keith Brion and Loras Schissel. (Barnhouse) (Grade 3.5) ($60.00) (2:22)
  “An absolutely stunning composition created by combining sections from several so Sousa's arrangements of 'Yankee Doodle'. The main secion, the 'fugue' is taken from Sousa's 'International Congress'.”
  
  
• A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum - Stephan Sondheim / John Moss. (Leonard) ($55.00) (Grade 3)
  “This stage revival (starring Nathan Lane) has been packing them in all season and again demonstrates the genius of composer / lyricist Stephen Sondheim. Four great ‘Forum’ songs in classic Broadway style are featured in John Moss’ concert version. Includes: Comedy Tonight, Bring Me My Bride, Everybody Ought To Have A Maid, and Lovely.”
  
  
• Great Movie Marches - arr. John Moss (Hal Leonard) ($55.00) (Grade 3)
  Great Movie Marches includes: River Kwai March, Colonel Hathi’s March, Star-Trek -- The Motion Picture, and Raiders March. There are many key changes from B flat to E flat, to F, to A flat and back to B flat. There are also many meter changes from the opening cut time to 4/4, to 12/8 and back to 4/4. Rhythmically, this is not too difficult, just rather lengthy.

  "Appealing melodies, contemporary harmonies and exciting rhythms combine to make impressive music that students will love rehearsing and performing and audiences will thoroughly enjoy."
  
  
• Legend of Starved Rock - Robert Sheldon. (Barnhouse)($68.00) (Grade 3.5)
  "Begins as a tone poem depicting the Illinois River and the peaceful Indian tribes that lived in the area. The tempo of the music quickens as the tribe seeks refuge from their enemies and then the piece reaches its climax at the peak of the battle. The music subsides as the ill-fated Indians are finally starved into defeat."
  
  
• Legends In The Mist - Michael Sweeney. (Hal Leonard) ($50.00) (Grade 3)
  Legends is “not meant to be descriptive of any specific tale surrounding Native American legends in New York State.” Rather, “it is only suggestive of the mysteries and moods surrounding these early legends.” Legends opens in the key of B-flat in 4/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 80 beats. There are many meter changes throughout going to 6/4 and back to 4/4 with some 3/4 and 5/4 measures also. The flute has an 8 measure solo near the beginning. The band must do some vocal sounds to represent the wind. Students must also strike pencils on their music stands. Many percussion parts are also called for including optional 3 different pitched steel drums.
  
  
• Power of the Dream - Babyface, David Foster and Linda Tompson / Jay Bocook. (Hal Leonard) ($50.00) (Grade 3)
  This arrangement is as perform by Celine Dion. It opens with a flute solo followed with an oboe solo and quarter note equal to 72. The tempo remains throughout. The key does change from E flat to F. The trumpet range is to A above the staff.
  
  
• Seasons to Love - Jonathan Larson / Jay Bocook. (Hal Leonard) ($50.00) (Grade 3)
  Seasons to Love is written in cut time with the half note equal to 84 in an easy groove. It is suggested that you may use a drum set if available. Ranges are not extreme; the trumpets go to G at the top of the staff, and the trombones go the E flat above the bass clef. Rhythmically this is not difficult.
  
  
• Siciliana Notturno - Alfred Reed (Hal Leonard) ($65.00) (Grade 3)
  Originally published as the second movement of a 5 movement suite for 4 part cello orchestra and double bass. This selection has been arranged as an alto saxophone solo with band accompaniment. The solo is written in 6/8 meter with the eighth note equal to 72 - 76. It is a gentle, restrained and quiet piece. A harp part is provided and may be played by a synthesizer with a good harp "stop" or a piano if played discreetly.
  
  
• Sounds of the Seasons - arr. John Moss (Hal Leonard) ($55.00) (Grade 3)
  A medley containing "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year", "Somewhere In My Memory" and "Silver Bells". The opening key is C in 3/4 time with the dotted half note equals 68 - 72. The tempo changes to quarter notes at 72 and into 4/4 time. Flutes and clarinets will be challenged with some moving sixteenth notes. The key changes to B flat and later to E flat.
  
  
• Strangers In The Night - B. Kaempfert, C. Singleton, and E. Schnyder / Harold Suilen (Molenaar) ($113.30) (Grade 3)
  A vocal part is included but not necessary for the performance of this piece. The melody line is passed around the band. One key change occurs near the end. The trumpet lies well in the staff, but the trombone and baritone require a range to F above the staff.
  
  
• Tarantella - arr. Alfred Reed (Barnhouse) ($68.00) (Grade 3.5) (2:56)
  "Alfred Reed's fiery transcription of this popular old Italian classic is a must play for better bands. A marvelous selection for a wide variety of performance situations."
  
  
• That Thing You Do - arr. Jay Bocook. (Hal Leonard) ($45.00) (Grade 3)
  “Here’s the catchy theme from the hot new Tom Hanks movie! Set in the style of a 60’s pop tune, it has a great hook, and captures all the innocence of an earlier era! Your kids and audience will love it!”
  
  
• Three Preludes - Anton Bruckner / Timothy Broege. (Daehn) ($72.00) (Grade 3)
  Three Preludes was arranged in memory of John P. Paynter. These preludes are taken from the organ preludes composed in 1836 by Anton Bruckner. Each of these preludes are separated from the other.
  
  • Prelude No. I is in the key of E flat. It is Largo e molto sostenuto.
  • Prelude No. II has no key signature. It is in 2/2 meter, Maestoso.
  • Prelude No. III is Allegro festive in the key of E flat and in 4/4 meter.

  Rhythmically, none of these preludes are very difficult. The ranges for instruments are not extreme. The first trumpet must play to high A. The first clarinet part goes to D above the staff.
  
  

• Under the Southern Cross - Jerry Nowak (Boosey and Hawkes) ($60.00) (Grade 3.5) A concert march in 4/4 meter. It was first performed January 23, 1993 at the Melbourne Town Hall under the direction of the composer. It was commissioned by the Melbourne Youth Music Council, Melbourne, Australia. The key changes frequently from E flat, to B flat, to A flat and then to F. The introduction is a fanfare. Every section of the band is featured in one or more sections. Syncopated rhythmic patterns are used throughout.
  
  
• The View From The Mountaintop - Timothy Mahr (Kjos) ($75.00) (Grade 3) (7:00)
  Although this title is given a grade 3, it is a difficult grade 3. It is generally slow throughout changing tempi from quarter note equals 60 to 92 and back, then to 108 and back to 60 again. The flute section is divided into 1st and 2nd parts. Flutes are challenged to play sixteenth note sextuplets in the key of C alternating between 1st and 2nd parts. Clarinets likewise have some sextuplet runs with the flute, piccolo and a piano part.

Grade 4 & 4.5

• As If Morning Might Arrive - Jack Stamp (Kjos) ($65.00) (Grade 4) (4:00)
  As If Morning Might Arrive is programmatic, depicting the dawning of a new day. This composition calls for many percussion parts including: timpani, bells, chimes, vibraphone, finger cymbals, crash cymbals, triangle, tam-tam, snare drum and bass drum.
  
  
• Celebration Fanfare - Joan Tower / Jack Stamp. (Hal Leonard) ($75.00) (Grade 4) (5:00)
  Celebration Fanfare is an arrangement from Joan Tower’s ballet Stepping Stones. There are many meter changes back and forth between 3/4 and 4/4 with some 2/4 and 3/8. The tempo starts are quarter note equal to 60, but changes at measure 11 to quarter note equal to 144. This tempo continues to measure 160 where it then changes back to quarter note equal 72 to the end. This selection calls for many keyboard percussion: marimba, vibraphone, and xylophone and also a synthesizer. It also calls for many assorted percussive instruments.
  
  
• A Chanukah Celebration - arr. David Bobrowitz and scored for band by Kenneth P. Soper. (Kjos) ($70.00) (Grade 4) (5:10 minutes)
  Features five traditional songs: "Chanukah", "The Dreydle Song", "O Chanukah", "Rock of Ages", and "Who Can Retell". The key changes often from C, to F, to A flat, to D flat, to G, and back to A flat. Tempo and meter also changes frequently.
  
  
• Eminence - Ralph Hultgren (Kjos) ($55.00) (Grade 4) (2:00)
  A concert band fanfare. It was written in 1987 to open the concert of the Queensland (Australia) Department of Education , MOST (Musically Outstanding Students Scholarship holders. Although the tempo is not fast (quarter note equals 88 - 96), it will be challenging for the woodwinds and xylophone with the many 32nd note runs.
  
  
• Fanfare for a Festive Day - Roger Cichy. (Daehn) ($50.00) (Grade 4.5)
  Dedicated to Joseph Christensen. It is based on four opening pitches: G, C, D, and F. The key signature starts in the key of C. There are many meter changes from 4/4 to 2/4 and some 3/4.
  
  
• John Tesh: Live at Red Rock - arr. John Wasson (Hal Leonard) ($75.00) (Grade 4)
  Includes: "Garden City", "Concetta", "Road Made for Animals", "April Song" and "Barcelona". Optional piano and rhythm section parts are provided. This selection has several key and tempo changes. There are also many accidentals. The trumpet has a short cadenza near the end.
  
  
• Prayer and Jubilation - Jack Stamp (Kjos) ($70.00) (Grade 4) (6:00 minutes)
  Based on the Air Force Hymn, "Lord, Guard and Guide the Men Who Fly". This selection opens solemnly at quarter note equals 72 with an English Horn solo doubled in the oboe. Time signatures and tempo changes are throughout changing from 4/4 to 3/4 and back with some changes of 7/8 to 4/4 and 5/8 and back to 4/4.

  Highlights from Space Jam starts with a moderate rock tempo with the quarter note equal to 100 beats. The key starts in E flat. The key and tempo do change several times. The key goes through A-flat, B-flat, and C. There are several repeated sections. The range for the trumpet requires them to reach a G-flat at the top of the staff. Some sixteenth note patterns are found throughout.
  
  
• Star Puzzle March - Soichi Konagaya (Kjos) ($60.00) (Grade 4) (3:25 minutes)
  A concert march based on "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star". There are several key changes from F, to B flat, to C, and back to F.
  
  
• Stars and Stripes Forever - John Philip Sousa / Keith Brion and Loras Schissel. (Barnhouse) (Grade 4) ($60.00) (3:26)
  December 24, 1996 marked the 100th anniversary of Sousa composing this masterpiece and what better reason to program it. Includes the vocal part (opt.) and extensive rehearsal and program notes for directors regarding the performance practices and styles of the period. This new publication is an official, authorized Sousa edition of John Philip Sousa, Inc., the family corporation."
  
  
• Streets and Inroads - Timothy Broege. (Manhattan Beach) ($95.00) (Grade 3)
  Streets and Inroads is a Fantasy for winds and percussion. This is a sound texture/open form music with many non-traditional sounds: rattling of woodwind keys, playing of the mouthpiece removed from the instrument, and unpitched glissandos. All parts are read from the score, i.e., all parts are identical.
  
  
• Summer in Central Park - Frank Bencriscutto (Kjos) ($65.00) (Grade 4) (8:00)
  A companion to the book "Total Musicianship" also published by Kjos. This composition teaches Dorian Jazz. The options for performance are 1) as is, no improvisation, 2) written solo, 3) student soloist(s) improvisation, 4) advanced soloist improvisation, or 5) any combination of the above.

Grade 5 & 5.5

• Caucausian Sketches - Ippolitov Ivanov / Dan Godfrey (Masters) ($55.00) (Grade 5)
  Rhythmically, Caucausian Sketches is very challenging. This is a suite in 4 parts. There is an English horn solo in the second movement which is doubled in the oboe . There are E flat trumpet parts provided as well as B flat cornet parts.
  
  
• Divertimento for Winds and Percussion - Roger Cichy. (Daehn) ($100.00) (Grade 5) Written as a tribute to Copland, Bernstein and Gershwin. It is divided into four separate movements: Exaltation, Follies, Remembrance and Salutation. This composition is rhythmically challenging. It has many meter changes and a key signature of C, but with many accidentals throughout. A harp part is included, but may be played by a piano or synthesizer. It has been recorded by the North Texas Wind Symphony conducted by Eugene Coporon on a CD entitled "Tributes".
  
  
• Gaian Visions - Frank Ticheli. (Manhattan Beach) ($250.00) (Grade 5)
  Written in three connected movements inspired by the natural beauty and the composer’s concerns about the environment. The first movement (Forgotten Forests) starts in 2/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 138 beats. There is no key signature in this composition. There are several meter changes from 3/4 to 4/4. The trumpets highest note is a G. The second movement ( Desecration) starts in 3/4 with the quarter note equal to 160. The meter changes often to 2/4, to 3/4, to 4/4, and 5/4. The third and final movement (Redemption) starts in 6/8 meter, rubato with the eighth note equal to 84. This changes to 2/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 126.
  
  
• Power of the Dream - Babyface, David Foster and Linda Thompson / Arr. Bob Krogstad with band accomp. adapted by John Moss. (Hal Leonard) ($65.00) (Grade 5)
  Power of the Dream is arranged to be used with choir, band and optional strings. The compatible publications are available separately as: SATB, SAB, 2-Part, String Pak and full performance cassette. This arrangement changes key often from E flat to F, to G, and to A flat. Trumpets must be able to play to high A.
