Deep Path Dances - David Holsinger. (TRN) ($80.00) (Grade 3) Deep Path Dances was commissioned for the Deep Path Junior High School Band, Lake Forest, Illinois, Heather Pettit, Director. There is no key signature and many accidentals are written in. The meter signature changes frequently from the opening 4/4 to 3/4, 6/8, 2/8 and 7/8. There are some short sixteenth note runs.

There are many dotted eighth / sixteenth and four

The opening key is E-flat, but this title changes keys frequently going through A-flat, B-flat, and C. The meter likewise changes frequently. It opens in 3/4 and changes to 4/4 and cut-time.
The Gladiator - John Philip Sousa / edited by Robert E. Foster. (Belwin) ($50.00) (Grade 3.5) This title is a concert march in cut-time with the half note equal to 120 to 128 beats per minute. The format is that of a standard march. The opening key is E-flat and it changes to A-flat at the trio.
Irving Berlin: The Early Years - Arr. Warren Barker. (Queenwood) ($85.00) (Grade 3) (Time 6:50) This title features: "Say It With Music", "A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody", "When The Midnight Choo-Choo Leaves For Alabam", "Play A Simple Melody", "All By Myself" and "Alexanders Ragtime Band". There are many meter (cut-time, 4/4, 6/8) changes, as well as many tempo changes. The key also changes frequently from the opening E-flat, to F, back to E-flat, B-flat, F again, B-flat again and finally A-flat.
Just South Of Utopia - James L. Hosay. (Curnow Music) ($54.00) (Grade 3) (Time 4:20) Just South Of Utopia is a fusion ballad which includes an optional keyboard (not included in the score) and electric bass parts. It is in the key of E-flat in 4/4 meter. The quarter note is equal to 73 beats per minute. The trumpet and alto saxophone are featured in solos.
Lake Zurich Celebration - Douglas Akey. (Queenwood) ($75.00) (Grade 3.5) (Time 5:00) Lake Zurich Celebration opens in the key of E-flat. The quarter note receives 120 beats per minute in 4/4 meter. The meter changes briefly to 7/8 for one measure, interspersed with 4/4 and some 3/4. Other meter signatures used include 6/8 and 9/8. There are many tempo changes also. The key changes to B-flat, but returns to E-flat.
Let It Shine! (This Little Light Of Mine) - Arr. James L. Hosay. (Curnow Music) ($59.00) (Grade 3) (Time 3:35) Let It Shine opens in the key of B-flat. The key changes several times going to E-flat and then back to B-flat again. The meter is 4/4. The tempo changes several times also. After a slow beginning, quarter note equal to 76 beats per minute, the tempo changes to a "gospel rock" with the quarter note now equal to 152 beats. Mid-West 50 - Stephen Bulla. (Curnow Music) ($59.00) (Grade 3) (Time 4:10) This title is a concert march to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic held in Chicago. The key changes from the opening B-flat to E-flat and back to B-flat again. The meter is 4/4. There are no repeats. This title is performed on the CD "Mid-West 50" by the Band Of The Belgian Navy, #CR-97007, available from SMC.
Mid-West Golden Jubilee Overture - James Curnow. (Curnow Music) ($69.00) (Grade 3) (Time 5:25) This overture was composed for the 1996 celebration of the first 50 years of the Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic and dedicated to the memory of John Paynter, past president for his tireless devotion to the clinic. The key changes often from the opening B-flat back and forth to E-flat and B-flat. The meter also changes several times from the opening 4/4 to 3/4 and back. Several instruments are featured in short solos: the flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet and the French horn. This title is recorded on the CD, "Tournament", by the University of Iowa Symphonic Band. The CD number is CR-97008 and is available from SMC.
My Old Kentucky Home - Arr. James Barnes. (SMC) ($50.00) (Grade 3) My Old Kentucky Home opens in the key of B-flat in 4/4 meter. The key changes to E-flat. There are many dotted rhythms as well as many eighth notes throughout this title. The flute, oboe and alto saxophone have short solos written. The oboe solo is cued in the first clarinet.
On The Square - Frank Panella / John Edmondson. (Queenwood) ($75.00) (Grade 3) (Time 2:45) On The Square is "the best known of Frank A. Panellas 39 published marches." It is in the traditional march format opening in the key of E-flat in cut-time. The half note is equal to 120 beats. The key changes at the trio to A-flat. There are many accidentals throughout.
Overture Energico - James Barnes. (Belwin) ($70.00) (Grade 3.5) This title is a re-release of the same title from 1982. It is in the key of E-flat. There are some accidentals. The meter signature is cut-time. The woodwinds encounter 16 measures of some technical work. The trumpet has a short solo. There are very few rests, with everyone playing most of the time.
Pacifica - Carl Strommen. (Belwin) ($65.00) (Grade 3) Pacifica is a re-release of the same title from 1987 by Boosey and Hawkes. It is in the key of F in 4/4 meter. The opening tempo is 76 beats per minute, but it changes to 132 beats. There are many dotted eighth and sixteenth note patterns. Syncopation is also used. The clarinets have a soli. The horns have a soli with the alto saxophones and clarinets. The flute and clarinet have solos.
Phil The Fluter - Arr. Michael Brand. An optional trumpet solo part is provided. This title comes from the Broadway musical "Bye Bye Birdie". The opening key is E-flat changing to G and then back to E-flat again. There are many accidentals. The meter is cut-time with the half note equal to 88 to 92 beats per minute in a "light bounce". The vocal range is from low B-flat below the staff to an optional fourth space E, written down an octave. The optional trumpet solo range is to the high C above the staff.

Tournament, (Rhapsody For Band) - Stephen Bulla. (Curnow Music) ($64.00) (Grade 3) (Time 4:45) Tournament is in the key of B-flat. The opening meter signature is 3/4 with the quarter note equal to 60 beats. The meter changes to 6/8 and the tempo also changes to 112 to 116 beats for the dotted quarter note. The meter again changes 3/4 but ends in 6/8. The percussion section has a four measure soli. There are some repeated sections. This title is performed on the CD "Tournament", recorded by the University of Iowa Symphonic Band. The CD number is CR-97008 and is available from SMC.
This title was originally written as a chamber work for 4 trombones. Later it was reworked for full brass ensemble and percussion. This version "expands on the original material providing a showcase for all sections." It is dedicated to Murry State University Wind Ensemble, Dennis Johnson, Conductor.
