String Orchestra

• Apollo 13 (Music From) - James Horner / Elliot del Borgo. (Leo) ($40.00) (Grade 2.5)
  This is a medley from the movie, including: Maintitle - Apollo 13; End Credits - Apollo 13; and ReEntry and Splashdown. In addition to the string parts, there are also percussion parts for snare drum, suspended cymbal, tympany and bells. Also included is a piano part. The tempo changes frequently from the introduction maestoso with the quarter note equal to 72, to con moto at 82 beats, then broadly at 90 beats, to Tempo I, and then to piu mosso at 132 and ending the last four measures at pesante at 82 beats per minute. The key changes from G to C, with several meter changes from 4/4 to 2/4/ and 3/4 and back to 4/4.

  Appalachian Waltz can be played by all strings in first position. Every section shares the melody. The viola is double in a 3rd violin part. There is an optional percussion and piano part included.

  This is a collection of 20 Christmas Carols including: "The Holly and the Ivy", "He Is Born, the Holy Child", "Silent Night", "March of the Kings", "On This Day Everywhere", "The Coventry Carol", "Angels We Have Heard On High", "Joy to the World", "O Come, All Ye Faithful", "The First Nowell", and 10 more.
  
  
• Concertante - arr. Elliot Del Borgo. (Kendor) ($40.00) (Grade 3) (4:00)
  Concertante is arranged after a duo by Fereol Mazas. This composition is allegro with the quarter note equal to 132 beats per minute. It is in the key of D. This work offers the opportunity to work with off-the-string bowing.
  
  
• Coronation March - Elliot Del Borgo (Kendor) ($32.00) (Grade 1) (3:00)
  Scored with solid harmonies at Maestoso with the quarter note equal to 116. The viola is doubled in a 3rd violin part.
  
  
• Dorian Essay - Elliot Del Borgo. (Kendor) ($40.00) (Grade 2) (4:45)
  Dorian Essay starts in 4/4 meter with vigor with the quarter note equal to 112 beats. The key signature of F is used but it is in Dorian mode. There are some repeated four sixteenth note patterns. This composition also uses double stops. Mutes are also used. There is a D.C. al coda.
  
  
• Easy Jazz String Orchestra - John Widger (Presser) ($18.75) (Grade 1.5)
  A collection of 5 short original jazz type tunes. It has been written for the very early orchestra students to experience jazz. The tunes are all written using quarter notes and some eighth note rhythms.
  
  
• Flower Duet (from Lakme, Act 1, Scene 2) - Leo Delibes / Stephen Wieloszynski. (Kendor) ($40.00) (Grade 2) (3:55)
  Flower Duet starts at andantino con moto with the quarter note equal to 120 beats. The key throughout is D. The tempo and meter does change several times. It goes through 4/4 at 108 beats to 3/4 meter at measure 56 with the quarter note equal to 120 again. There are some eighth note triplet patterns. An optional piano part for rehearsal is provided.
  
  
• His Master’s Voice - arr. Stephen Wieloszynski. (Kendor) ($47.00) (Grade 3)
  A collection of three separate famous themes.
  • Allegro Moderato by Bernardo Pasquini, is in the key of A. It is written in cut time with the half note receiving 110 to 130 beats per minute.
  • Allegro Maestoso by Henry Purcell, is in 3/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 88 - 96 beats per minute. This section is in the key of F. The violin part is rhythmically challenging.
  • Rondeau by Jean Joseph Mouret is in the key of D in 4/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 108 - 120 beats.

  This Russian folk dance arrangement is scored with the viola part doubled as a 3rd violin. An optional piano part is included.
  
  
• Melody Book for Strings - composed and/or arranged by Merle J. Isaac, Dorothy A Straub, and Robert S. Genualdi and edited by Dorothy A. Straub. (C. Fischer)
  (Full Score - $12.95; Piano - $8.95; each individual book $4.95)
  This book contains 8 pieces with 3 orchestrations for the young string players. Titles include: Barcarolle (orchestration), From the Northland (orchestration), Romanza, Rondino (orchestration), San Souci, Serenade for Yasyaki, Two plus Three, and Valse Melodique. The three orchestral solos can be performed in various ways.
  
  
• Norwegian Dance - Edvard Grieg / Tony Finno (Kendor) ($40.00) (Grade 4) (2:20)
  Norwegian Dance is rather slow with a tempo marking of Allegretto tranquillo e grazioso with the quarter note equal to 54. The violins, viola and cello share the melody line with many sixteenth and sixteenth-eighth note patterns.
  
  
• On Broadway - Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Mike Stoller and Jerry Leiber / Paul Lavander. (Hal Leonard) ($35.00) (Grade2)
  A steady rock with the quarter note equal to 126. There is an optional electric bass part and 2 drum parts and piano provided.
  
  
• Palladio: Concerto Grosso for String Orchestra - Karl Jenkins. (Boosey & Hawkes) ($50.00) (Grade 5)
  • Movement 1 is in the key of F in common time. It is allegretto with the quarter note receiving 90 beats per minute. It has a D.S. al Coda.
  • Movement 2 is largo with the quarter note at 44 beats. It also is in common time with the key of E-flat.
  • Movement 3 is vivace with the quarter note at 140-145 beats per minute. It is in 2/4 meter. There are many 2-measure repeated phrases to be repeated 4 times. There also is D.S. al Fine with repeats.

  This arrangement of The Power of the Dream is as performed by Celine Dion and is correlated to the Essential Elements for Strings Book 2.

  This is the string pak to accompany the choir and band arrangements of the same name.
  
  
• Rhythmic Variations on Two Ancient Hymns - Howard Hanson. (Carl Fischer) ($35.00) (Grade 3)
  Rhythmic Variations is in the key of C with the quarter note receiving 120 beats per minute. The meter changes frequently from 4/4 to 5/4, to 6/4 and then to 3/4.
  
  
• A Rose Bouquet - arr. Stephen Wieloszynski. (Kendor) ($45.00) (Grade 3)
  A composition of three separate movements by composers of the Romantic era.
  • 1) Chorale Prelude Opus 122, # 8, by Johannes Brahms is in the key of F. It is slow in 3/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 48.
  • 2) To A Wild Rose by Edward MacDowell is in the key of G. It also is slow, but in 2/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 60 beats per minute.
  • 3) Heidenroslein, Opus 3, (A Little Rose in a Hedgerow) is by Franz Schubert. It is somewhat rhythmically challenging in the key of G. It is in 2/4 meter at 72 beats per minute.
    
    
• Zwei Kammerwerke (Two Chamber Works) - Franz J. Haydn / Kevin Kaisirshot (Kendor) ($40.00) (Grade 3) (4:45)
  Both pieces are Allegro. The first tune is in 4/4 meter while the second is in 2/4 meter. They both have repeated sections. These tunes are taken from the many Baryton Trios written by Hadyn while in the service of Prince Nicholas Esterhazy.

• Sacred Settings - arr. Frost. (Kjos) (Full Score $8.95; parts $4.45) (Grade 1.5)
  Sacred Settings is published for the following instrumentation: Violin, Viola, Cello, String Bass, Flute/Oboe, Clarinet/Trumpet, Horn, Trombone/Bassoon, Keyboard/Guitar. Many different combinations are possible. You can mix or match a variety of pieces to meet your needs.
  Titles include: A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, Abide With Me, Amazing Grace, Crusader’s Hymn, The Doxology, Faith Of Our Fathers, Nearer My God To Thee, Rock Of Ages, Sweet Hour of Prayer and 15 more for a total of 25 chorales.

• Cavalleria Rusticana (Intermezzo Sinfonico) - Pietro Mascani and edited by Carl Simpson. (Masters) ($32.00) (Grade 2.5)
  The Intermezzo Sinfonico starts andante sostenuto with the quarter note equal to 54 beats per minute. The key is F and the meter is 3/4 The trumpet must be able to play to a G at the top of the staff. This composition is in the new Concert Masters Series by Masters Music.
  
  

Grade 3 and 3.5

• The Bells of St. Mary’s - Orchestrated by Timothy Broege (words by Douglas Furber, music by A. Emmett Adams). (Kalmus) ($40.00) (Grade 3)
  The Bells of St. Mary’s starts slowly in 4/4 in the key of E flat. The meter changes in measure 5 to 6/8 meter. In the large repeated section, the oboe has a solo the first time through with the french horn having the solo on the repeat. The meter changes again in measure 13 to 4/4. Alto and tenor saxophone parts are provided. This composition is in the new Nostalgia Series by Kalmus Music.
  
  
• By the Light of the Silvery Moon - orchestrated by William Ryden (words by Edward Madden and music by Gus Edwards) (Kalmus) ($50.00) (Grade 3.5)
  By the Light of the Silvery Moon is in common time, allegretto, with the quarter note equal to 112. It starts in the key of C, but changes in measure 82 to the key of E flat. Also included are alto and tenor saxophone parts. This composition is in the new Nostalgia Series by Kalmus Music.
  
  
• Divertimento in D (K.136 / 125A) - W. A. Mozart / transcribed Steven L. Rosenhaus. (Masters) ($70.00) (Grade 3)
  The 1st movement is allegro with the quarter note at 108. It is in the key of D in 4/4 meter. There are some repeated sections. The 2nd movement is andante in 3/4 meter with the quarter note at 72 beats. It is the key of G. The third movement is presto with the quarter note at 132 in the key of D. It is in 2/4 meter. • Eugen Onegen Waltz - Petre Ilich Tchaikovsky / edited William Ryden. (Masters) ($55.00) (Grade 3)
  Eugen Onegen Waltz is in the key of D throughout, however there are many accidentals. The tempo is Tempo de valse with the dotted half note equal to 72 and it remains the same throughout. Technically this is not difficult. Ranges for winds are not extreme. The trumpet must play to the G at the top of the staff. Both clarinet parts must go above the break. • If You Were the Only Girl in the World - Orchestrated by Timothy Broege (words by Clifford Grey, music by Nat D. Ayer). (Kalmus) ($55.00) (Grade 3)
  This composition is a moderate waltz in the key of F. The meter changes near the end to 4/4 and becomes a gentle swing. The key also changes to B flat. The are alto and tenor saxophone parts included. The composition is in the new Nostalgia Series by Kalmus Music.
  
  
• Orpheus In The Underworld Overture - Jacques Offenbach / edited Clark McAlister. (Masters) ($40.00) (Grade 3)
  Orpheus in the Underworld Overture has several key changes, starting in D and changing to C and then back to D. There are some repeated sections. The tempo is the real challenge (quarter note equal to 132). The 1st flute and the 1st violin have a short repeated 16th note pattern, but otherwise technically, this is not difficult. • Over There - George Cohan / orchestrated William Ryden. (Kalmus) ($55.00) (Grade 3.5)
  Over There is a fast march in 2/4 with the quarter note equal to 120 to 136 beats per minute. It is in the key of B flat. Optional alto and tenor saxophone parts are included. This composition is in the new Nostalgia Series by Kalmus Music.
  
  
• Pavane for a Dead Princes (Pavane pour une infante defunte) - Maurice Ravel, orchestrated / edited Clark McAlister. (Masters) ($40.00) (Grade 3)
  Pavane for a Dead Princes opens with a flugelhorn solo and doubled in the french horn. This composition is very slow with the quarter equal to 54 beats per minute. It starts in the key of G, goes to B flat and then back to G again. The composition is in the new Concert Masters Series from Masters Music.
  
  
• Poor Butterfly - orchestrated by William Ryden (words by John Golden and music by Raymond Hubbell) (Kalmus) ($55.00) (Grade 3.5)
  Poor Butterfly starts at a moderate tempo, quarter notes equal to 100 in 4/4 meter. The key starts in F. The tempo changes to cut time in measure 29 with the half note equal to 44 beats. The meter and tempo change again in measure 61 to 4/4 at 100 beats. The key also changes at this point to A flat. The meter once again changes to cut time.   Slavonic Dance is presto in 3/4 with the dotted half note equal to 88 to 96. The key changes several times from the opening B flat to G and back to B flat. • Take Me Out to the Ball Game - orchestrated by Steven L. Rosenhaus (words by Jack Norworth and music by Albert von Tilzer) (Kalmus) ($55.00) (Grade 3)
  Take Me Out ... has a three bar introduction Maestoso in 3/4 meter in the key of G. This changes to dotted half note equal to 56 and then a key change at measure 7 to the key of C. There are many accidentals throughout. Alto and tenor saxophone parts are included. There is an optional narrator part to make it more of a novelty. After a D.S. al Coda, everyone may sing along in the coda. This composition is in the new Nostalgia Series by Kalmus Music.

  When Irish Eyes .. is allegretto ma non troppo in 3/4 meter. It starts in the key of D but changes to F. The meter changes in the last 4 measures to 6/8 with the tempo changing to allegro subito. • Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life - Orchestrated by Timothy Broege (words by Rida Johnson Young and music by Victor Herbert) (Kalmus) ($40.00) (Grade 4)
  Ah, Sweet Mystery Life starts andante con amore in 4/4 in the key of C. The key changes to D at measure 40 with a meter change to 12/8. Alto and tenor saxophone parts are provided. This composition is in the new Nostalgia Series by Kalmus Music.
  
  
• Funeral March of a Marionette - Charles Gounod / edited Steven L. Rosenhaus. (Masters) ($50.00) (Grade 4)
  Funeral March of a Marionette opens allegretto in 6/8 meter with the dotted quarter note equal to 96 to 108. It starts in the key of F. At measure 7 the tempo changes to adagio with the dotted quarter equal to 76 and then later to Tempo I. There are several repeated sections and several key changes. At measure 95 the key changes to D and then back to F with a D.S. al Coda. There are many accidentals throughout. This composition is in the new Concert Masters Series by Masters Music.
  
  
• Hungarian Dances Nos 5 and 6 - Johannes Brahms / edited William Ryden. (Masters) ($50.00) (Grade 4)
  Hungarian Dance No. 5 is allegro in 2/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 144 beats per minute. This Dance starts in the key of B flat but changes to G at measure 160 and then back again to B flat. There are several repeated sections. Hungarian Dance No. 6 is vivace with the quarter note at 144 beats in 2/4 meter. The key starts in D but changes to F and changes back to D. There are repeated sections in this Dance. The ranges in either Dances are not extreme with the 1st trumpet to fifth line F. Both clarinet parts must play above the break. • L’Arlesienne Suite - Georges Bizet / edited Carl Simpson. (Masters) ($85.00) (Grade 4)
  L’Arlesienne Suite is divided into 3 movements.
  • 1) The Ouverture changes keys several times. It opens in the key of E flat (allegro deciso) with the quarter note equal to 104 in 4/4 meter. There is a clarinet solo in this section. The key changes to C and slows down to 84 beats, but changing back to E flat and back to tempo I. The key changes again to A flat with the tempo slowing down to 63 beats.
  • 2) The Minuetto is allegro giocoso in 3/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 184 beats. There is an oboe solo and flute solo in this movement.
  • 3) The Entr’acte is andante moderato ma con moto with the quarter note equal to 88 beats. It is in 4/4 meter in the key of E flat. The horn gets a solo in this movement.

  The most popular march ever written is created from Sousa’s original full orchestra version. It is in the key of D. The score includes extensive rehearsal notes and performance suggestions and the parts are marked with the bowings used with the Symphony Orchestras. The optional Harp and Vocal parts are also included.
  
  
• Summon the Heroes - John Willliams / Calvin Custer (Hal Leonard) ($65.00) (Grade 4)

  Die Fledermous (The Bat) opens allegro vivace in 2/2 meter in the key of G. The meter and tempo changes open to 4/4, 2/4 and to 3/4. The key likewise changes often, from the opening G to C, to F and then to D. This composition is in the new Concert Masters Series by Masters Music.

  1) Prelude is allegro con brio in 2/4 meter in the key of C. The tempo and meter changes several times from A back to C. 2) Anitra’s Dance is in 3/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 160. It is in the key of C but there are many accidentals. 3) In the Hall of the Mountain King is in common time with the quarter note equal to 138. It is in the key of E flat, but has many accidentals.
