String Orchestra

Grade 1 & 1.5

• Bartok Suite (From "For Children") - Bela Bartok / Larry Clark. (Warner Bros.) ($30.00) Grade 1.5) The Bartok Suite is in four short movements. Each one is in 2/4 meter. There are no key signatures, but accidentals are written in.

• Latin and Lace - Bryan Kidd. (Warner Bros.) ($30.00) (Grade 1.5) This title was commissioned by the Thomas Jefferson High School For Technology Orchestra, Hazel Cheilek, Director for their performance at the Mid-West Band & Orchestra Clinic in December, 1995. The composition is for use with Oraff instruments. It is in 4/4 meter in the key of G in Latin style with the quarter note equal to 104 beats. The Oraff instruments needed are: glockenspiel, bass metallophone, bass xylophone, contra bass bars (opt.), percussion I (triangle / suspended cymbals), percussion II ( Guiro / claves), percussion III (maracas), percussion IV (bangos), and percussion V (vibraslap).

• Rainbows In The Sky - Frederic Copin / Carson Rothrock. (Musicians Publications) ($30.00) (Grade 1) Rainbows In The Sky is in the key of D in 4/4 meter. The violin part has been divided into two separate parts. A piano part is included. This title is in the Instant Strings Series from Musicians Publications.

• Sonatine for Strings - Elliot Del Borgo. (Warner Bros.) ($30.00) (Grade 1.5) Sonatine is in the key of D in 4/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 120 beats per minute. A piano part is provided. There is a D.C. This title uses mostly half and quarter notes with a few eighth notes.

• The Torch Burns Bright - Larry Clark. (Warner Bros.) ($30.00) (Grade 1.5) The Torch Burns Bright is in the key of D. It is in 4/4 meter "Allegro con brio".

Grade 2 & 2.5

• Panis Angelicus -Cesar Franck / Bill Holcombe. (Musician Publications) ($30.00) (Grade 2.5) (4:30) Panis Angelicus is in the key of G with some accidentals. There are many eighth notes. No piano part is included.

• Pomp and Circumstance - Sir Edward Elgar / Elliot Del Borgo. (Warner Bros.) ($35.00) (Grade 2.5) Pomp and Circumstance is in the key of G in 4/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 80 beats per minute. The violins have been divided into two parts. A piano part has been provided. There are some accidentals. There also is an optional repeat.

• Romanza - Owen Goldsmith (Warner Bros.) ($35.00) (Grade 2) Romanza is in the key of C in 4/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 72 beats per minute. The violins have been divided into two separate parts. The viola part can be substituted by a third violin part provided. An optional piano part is provided. There is much use of syncopation and some accidentals in this tune.

• Sakura, Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) - A traditional Japanese Folk Song arranged by Elliot Del Borgo. (Warner Bros.) ($35.00) (Grade 2) Sakura, Sakura is in the key of G in 4/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 80 beats per minute. The violins have been divided into two parts. A piano part is provided. There are some eighth notes in the violin parts.

• String Bouquet - Lennie Niehaus. (Kendor) ($40.00) (Grade 2.5) The key signature is the key of G, but alternating between G major and e minor. It starts in 6/8 meter with the dotted-quarter note equal to 76 to 80 beats. The meter changes to 3/4 with the tempo set at 72 beats. This changes back to 6/8 meter. There is a D.S. al coda. There are many dotted-eighth, sixteenth, eighth note patterns. An optional percussion and piano part is provided. This composition is in the Cadet String Orchestra Series.

• Waltz in A Major - Johannes Brahms / Owen Goldsmith. (Warner Bros.) ($35.00) (Grade 2.5) Waltz in A Major is in the key of A in 3/4 meter. The violin part is divided into two parts. The viola part can be substituted by a third violin part provided. A piano part has been provided. There are some repeated sections.

Grade 3 & 3.5

• Cruella de Vil - Mel Leven / Lloyd Conley. (Hal Leonard) ($40.00) (Grade 3) Cruella de Vil is from the Walt Disney movie "101 Dalmatians". It is in the key of F in 4/4 meter in swing style with the quarter note equal to 104 beats per minute. There are many accidentals. A piano part is provided as well as a percussion (drum set) part. There is a repeated section.

• Festival Music - Paul W. Whear. (Ludwig Music) ($60.00) (Grade 3 and 4) This composition was written to include parts for less advanced players for a festival where there may a wide range of abilities. Less advanced parts included on separate pages are Violin A, Violin B, Viola A, Cello A, String Bass A. Generally these parts are not as demanding rhythmically, but they do have some sixteenth note patterns. They retain enough of the character of the original tune to make it challenging, but interesting. There is no key signature. The meter signature changes back and forth between 4/4 and 2/4. The tempo starts slowly at 72 beats, but changes also to 112 beats per minute.

• Menuetto from "Clarinet Quintet in A Major, K. 581" - Wolfgang A. Mozart / Lennie Niehaus. (Kendor Music) ($40.00) (Grade 3) (4:35 minutes) Menuetto is in 3/4 in the key of A with the quarter note equal to 112 beats per minute. The key changes to C but goes back to A. There are some accidentals. There are many eighth notes.

• Salute to Irving Berlin - Irving Berlin / Calvin Custer. (Hal Leonard) ($45.00)
  (Grade 3.5) This is a medley containing "There’s No Business Like Show Business", "Puttin’ On the Ritz", and "God Bless America". The key changes several times from D to G to F, back to G and finally C. The tempo also changes several times. There is an optional violin 3 part or viola T.C. included. A percussion part is also included.

• Seasons of Love (from "Rent") - Jonathan Larson / Elliot Del Borgo. (Hal Leonard) ($40.00) (Grade 3) Seasons of Love is in the key of G and in 4/4 meter. The key, tempo and meter do not change. There is a percussion (drum set) part included.

• You Must Love Me - music by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Tim Rice / Elliot Del Borgo. (Hal Leonard) ($40.00) (Grade 3) This is from the motion picture "Evita". It is in the key of C in 4/4 meter.

Grade 4 & 4.5

• Braveheart, Themes from - James Horner / Lloyd Conley. (Hal Leonard) ($45.00) (Grade 4) Themes include: "Main Title", "Attack On Murron", "For The Love Of A Princess", and "Bannockburn". This composition starts in the key of D but goes through many key changes: to F, then to C, a return to D and finally to G. There are also several meter changes. It starts in 4/4, but goes to 2/4 and then to 3/4. The tempo changes often. There are some repeated sections. Rhythmically there are some dotted eighth/sixteenth note patterns as well as some dotted sixteenth/thirty-second note patterns at the slower tempo. Piano, percussion and mallet percussion parts have been included.

• The Surprise Variations (2nd Movement from "Symphony #94 in G Major") - Franz J. Haydn / Stephen Wieloszynski. (Kendor Music) ($50.00) (Grade 4) The Surprise Variations is in cut time with the half note equal to 68 to 76 beats per minute. There is an optional piano part provided. The violins are divided into 2 first parts and 2 second parts. The key signature changes to C minor then to C major. There are many written eighth notes, eighth note triplets, dotted eighth/sixteenth note patterns and some four sixteenth note patterns.

Full Orchestra

• Chant and Joyous Dance - Elliot Del Borgo. (Warner Bros.) ($50.00) (Grade 3.5) Chant and Joyous Dance is in the key of F. There are some accidentals however. It is in 4/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 72 beats. There are some tempo changes throughout. There also is a D.S. al Coda. Many sixteenth notes are used in this composition.

• Gypsy Songs - Antonin Dvorak / transcribed by Owen Goldsmith. (Warner Bros.) ($50.00) (Grade 3.5) This title contains two separate compositions: Op 55., No. 4 and Op. 55, No.6. They are both in 2/4 meter. The No. 4 is in the key of B-flat "Andante" with much use of syncopation. The No. 6 is in the key of F. The quarter note is equal to 76 beats per minute. The woodwinds have some four sixteenth note patterns. The violins have eighth/two sixteenth note patterns. There also is some syncopation.

• Hang On Sloopy (My Girl Sloopy) - Bert Russell and Wes Farrell / Bob Cerulli. (Warner Bros.) ($40.00) (Grade 2.5) Hang On Sloopy is in the key of G in 4/4 meter. There are many eighth notes. Syncopation is used throughout. There are some repeated sections.

• Near the Cross Medley with Calvary Covers It All - Arr. Bob Walters. (Washington Music Ministries) ($39.95) (Grade 4) This title starts in the key of F but changes several times to B-flat and finally to C. It is in 4/4 meter. There are some accidentals throughout. This title is designed to work with full orchestra and smaller ensembles.

• Star Wars (Main Theme) - John Williams / Charles Sayre. (Warner Bros.) ($50.00) (Grade 3.5) This title is from the movies "Star Wars", "The Empire Strikes Back", and "Return of the Jedi". It is in the key of F in 4/4 meter with the quarter note equal to 112 beats per minute. There are some accidentals.
