written on the subject. The book features well over 400 different rhythms
collected from a vast geographical area including North Africa, the Eastern
Mediterranean, Greece, Turkey, the Balkans, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, and
Central Asia. Each rhythm is notated, and explanations are provided of the
rhythm's origin and use, as well as alternate names for the rhythm from other
locales. The book includes an introduction, photographs of the author's large
collection of instruments, pictures of performance practice, exercises, and 6
