Alan Dawson was a legendary drummer and educator. His performing credits include work with the top artists in jazz: Oscar Peterson, Charles Mingus, Dave Brubeck, Lionel Hampton, Quincy Jones, Dexter Gordon, and more. His pupils and other drummers who were influenced by him read like a Who’s Who of per-cussionists: Tony Williams, Terri Lyne Carrington, Steve Smith, Kenwood Dennard, Vinnie Colaiuta, and many others. A performer first and foremost, Dawson discovered and refined his considerable teaching talents during an 18-year association with Berklee College of Music. Alan Dawson was a drummer’s drummer and a musician’s musician. He believed the instrument itself was secondary to teaching people to play music. This new text and CD combination from Warner Bros. Publications was put together by John Ramsay, a prominent drummer in his own right and a former student of Dawson’s. The book contains all the important techniques and concepts that Alan Dawson embraced in his own playing and subsequently taught to his students. The 2 CDs include some remastered audio examples from actual lessons taught by Dawson himself over the years. This is a highly comprehensive textbook from a jazz master that every drummer must have in his or her library.
